## Cyber Attack Affects London Nursery Chain

The Kido nursery chain has reportedly fallen victim to a serious cyber attack. Cybercriminals are said to have gained access to sensitive information concerning thousands of children, and have begun posting some of this data on the dark web. According to reports, this includes pictures, names, and addresses of approximately 8,000 children, which hackers are now using to demand ransom.

## Details of the Breach

Sources indicate that the perpetrators of this attack, who identify themselves as “Radiant,” have made public some of the stolen information. Among this data are images and profiles of ten children, as well as details pertaining to their parents and caregivers, including safeguarding notes. This breach poses a significant threat not only to the privacy of the children but also to their families.

## Investigation Underway

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that they received a referral on Thursday regarding the ransomware incident targeting a London-based organization. A spokesperson highlighted that investigations are ongoing and are currently in the initial stages under the Cyber Crime Unit. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with this alarming case.

## Public Response

The community’s reaction has been one of distress and concern. Bryony Wilde, a parent with a child enrolled at a Kido nursery in London, emphasized that the personal information of children should not hold any monetary value. She expressed the view that additional measures should be taken to safeguard children’s privacy.

In discussing the hacking incident, Wilde described the affected children as “completely innocent victims.” BBC News has also reported engaging the hackers, who defended their actions by claiming they weren’t asking for an excessive amount of ransom and believed they were entitled to compensation for what they term a “pentest.”

## Understanding ‘Pentest’

The term “pentest,” or penetration test, refers to a practice where ethical hackers are employed to evaluate the security of an organization in a structured and legitimate manner. However, many see the hackers’ claims as a clear manipulation of this concept to justify their unethical behavior.

## Insights from Cybersecurity Experts

Jonathon Ellison, the National Cyber Security Centre’s national resilience director, expressed deep concern over the theft of sensitive information affecting nurseries. He remarked that cybercriminals will target any entity if they believe there is financial gain to be made, and targeting institutions that care for children is particularly reprehensible.

Furthermore, Ellison noted that the NCSC has developed tailored guidance to assist early years settings, such as nurseries, in protecting themselves against cyber threats. This includes advice for individuals who might be concerned if their information was involved in the data breach.

## Kido’s Commitment to Security

For its part, Kido operates a network of educational facilities across multiple countries, including the USA, UK, India, and China. The organization claims to implement best practices in operations, training, and care across its campuses. They have yet to release a formal statement regarding the cyber attack, although their facilities are widespread, with 19 locations throughout London.

## Staying Updated

For those looking to stay informed about developments related to this incident or want updates on other local news, joining the London Crimewatch WhatsApp community may be beneficial. Members will receive updates directly to their phones, alongside exclusive offers and promotions.

In a time when data security is paramount, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by organizations, particularly those focused on children’s welfare.
