The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is making significant strides in its burgeoning space sector, having poured approximately AED44 billion (about $12 billion) into the industry. This investment reflects the nation’s dedication to fostering greater participation from the private sector while enhancing global collaborations, as highlighted by Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency.
A New Era for the Space Industry
Dr. Al Falasi emphasized that the UAE’s space industry is entering a transformative phase. As the public sector has historically led many projects, private companies are now playing an increasingly pivotal role. He noted, “Many nations started their space programs with substantial government funding, but they also empowered their private sectors to become crucial partners. We are adopting this model in our approach.”
Evolving Roles in the Space Sector
While ongoing government support remains essential, the relationship between public and private sectors in the UAE is evolving into a synergy that benefits both. Dr. Al Falasi remarked that, “In the past decade, the government shouldered much of the responsibility, but today we are witnessing a shift where private enterprises—from large corporations to emerging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—are stepping up.”
The heightened involvement of Emirati private companies is evident in both local and international platforms. At the recent Dubai Airshow, participation from SMEs has doubled compared to prior editions, and the area allocated to these firms has expanded by over 60%. This growth highlights the UAE’s commitment to bolstering its domestic space industry.
Expanding International Collaborations
Looking ahead, Dr. Al Falasi anticipates that UAE firms will increasingly engage on the international stage, thanks in part to the government’s strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening global partnerships. The Dubai Airshow serves as a vital forum to promote cooperation within the global space community, as evidenced by the attendance of 15 leaders from international space agencies.
Dr. Al Falasi stated, “We are conducting bilateral and trilateral discussions with space agencies worldwide to uncover collaboration opportunities and showcase the capabilities of the UAE’s private space sector.”

The UAE Space Agency has set an ambitious goal: to position the UAE among the top ten global destinations for space-related companies by 2031. This vision aims to reinforce the country’s standing as a prominent hub for space sciences and future technologies.
