Unlocking AI’s Potential: An Insight into IBM Consulting’s Strategy in the MEA Region

As organizations across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) navigate the complexities of digital transformation, one voice has emerged with clarity and vision: Lula Mohanty, the newly appointed Managing Partner for IBM Consulting in the region. With a robust global strategy tailored to local nuances, Mohanty is on a mission to guide businesses toward leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for true enterprise-grade deployment.

Defining the Priorities

Transitioning into her role earlier this year, Mohanty has articulated three fundamental priorities that will guide her actions over the next 12 to 18 months. First and foremost is her commitment to unlocking the full value of AI for clients, emphasizing the need to move beyond mere experimentation. “Today, only 1% of enterprise data interacts with large language models; our focus is on helping clients access and govern the remaining 99% that can actually drive value,” she asserts.

The second priority underscores the critical importance of building strong ecosystems. Mohanty recognizes that successful transformation is rooted in collaboration across hyperscalers, regional partners, and governmental bodies. “Transformation doesn’t happen in isolation, it happens in collaboration,” she emphasizes.

Finally, ensuring a skilled workforce is pivotal in a rapidly growing region. Mohanty believes that equipping organizations with the right technology and talent is essential to maintaining ambitious growth: “Our role is to transform not just systems but also the people operating them.”

The MEA markets showcase rich diversity and rapid evolution, presenting unique challenges in aligning global consulting strategies with local needs. Mohanty explains that while IBM’s global consulting strategy offers scale, intellectual property, and proven assets, success in regions like the UAE often requires tailoring these capabilities to align with national directives such as the Digital Economy Strategy and the National AI Strategy 2031.

“Our collaboration with AWS plays a crucial role in localizing these global capabilities to accelerate cloud and AI adoption tailored to UAE clients,” she reveals. This approach enables the development of solutions aligned with national agendas, spanning areas such as smart government, healthcare compliance, and banking modernization.

The Essential Role of AI Leadership

Among the many changes in the business landscape, the position of Chief AI Officers (CAIOs) is increasingly critical. Serving as a bridge between national ambitions and enterprise execution, CAIOs play a vital role in ensuring that AI adoption yields tangible results. Mohanty cites a recent collaboration with the Dubai Future Foundation, which highlights how CAIOs can effectively align enterprise AI with national objectives, balancing innovation, governance, and trust.

Addressing Transformation Challenges

Despite the urgency of digital transformation, many organizations falter in their execution. Mohanty notes that a common misstep is treating transformation as a mere technology acquisition rather than a holistic business reinvention. “Too often, organizations fixate on tools, overlooking the intertwined elements of data architecture, governance, and change management,” she states.

IBM Consulting takes a more disciplined approach. By merging strategy with execution, underscored by their IBM Consulting Advantage delivery platform, they guide clients in sequencing their transformation efforts. “We help clients establish the right data backbone, deploy pilots with clear outcomes, and scale with governance,” she explains. This disciplined framework differentiates IBM Consulting by combining creativity with predictability, turning lofty aspirations into tangible impact.

A Landscape of Opportunities

The consulting industry itself is booming, valued at approximately $366 billion. When it comes to growth opportunities across the Gulf states and Africa, Mohanty believes IBM Consulting is well-positioned to capitalize on unique advantages. She articulates, “We are client zero — running our own operations on AI across over 700 workflows, on a trajectory to save $4.5 billion in productivity.”

This experience proves invaluable as IBM Consulting assists governments, healthcare, financial services, and energy sectors in avoiding common pitfalls while accelerating results. “The opportunity lies in turning bold national ambitions into measurable, sustained outcomes,” she concludes.

Looking Ahead

As businesses grapple with shifting paradigms and rising expectations, leaders like Mohanty are at the forefront of an effort to redefine what’s possible with AI in the MEA region. Her approach, steeped in collaboration and a thorough understanding of local dynamics, illuminates a path forward in a landscape ripe for innovation. With substantial opportunities on the horizon, IBM Consulting stands ready to guide organizations through the turbulence of digital transformation towards a future marked by sustained growth and impactful change.
