Thales and UAE Cyber Security Council Join Forces for Cyber Centre of Excellence
Thales has entered into a significant partnership with the UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) to establish a Cyber Centre of Excellence in the UAE. This collaboration focuses on developing three pivotal projects designed to enhance cybersecurity within the region.
Space META-SOC: Securing the Skies
One of the key initiatives is the Space META-SOC, a specialized Security Operation Centre dedicated to safeguarding space infrastructures. This centre will be developed in collaboration with a local industrial partner, providing a robust support network for the national Security Operation Centre (SOC). By integrating cutting-edge technical capabilities, the Space META-SOC aims to facilitate knowledge transfer through training that zeroes in on satellite constellations and ground system monitoring. This effort is critical as the demands for cybersecurity in the space sector rise.
Cyber Evaluation Lab: Building Local Expertise
Another cornerstone of the partnership is the creation of a Cyber Evaluation Lab. This facility will focus on testing and evaluating both software and hardware assets, and it will be managed by UAE nationals. The lab’s objectives extend to bolstering the development of essential policies, standards, and governance frameworks tailored for critical sectors. Initially, the focus will be on the space sector, positioning the UAE as a leader in cybersecurity practices within the region. This initiative not only supports local talent but also aims to cultivate a sustainable ecosystem for cybersecurity expertise.
Crypto Lab: Innovating Secure Solutions
Additionally, the collaboration will see the establishment of a Crypto Lab. This platform will serve as a space for designing, testing, and validating cryptographic solutions specifically for space applications. Emphasizing advanced methodologies like Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), the Crypto Lab aims to push the boundaries of secure communication in the ever-evolving landscape of technology. Thales experts will facilitate knowledge transfer through advanced training, capitalizing on their extensive experience with projects from the European Space Agency (ESA).
A Vision for Cybersecurity Excellence
These initiatives form part of the broader Cyber Centre of Excellence, spearheaded by His Excellency Dr. Al Kuwaiti, who leads the UAE government’s cyber security efforts. The partnership aligns with the UAE’s vision for technological sovereignty, bolstering local research and development that contributes to a domain of expertise in space cybersecurity. Dr. Al Kuwaiti emphasized the importance of enhancing cyber resilience and building national talent in the digital realm, which is increasingly essential given the rise in cyber threats. He also noted the ongoing commitment to strengthen partnerships with leading global companies to ensure a secure digital environment.
Commitment to a Secure Digital Future
Christophe Salomon, Executive Vice-President of Secure Communications & Information Systems at Thales, expressed excitement about the partnership. He stated, “This partnership with the UAE Cyber Security Council marks a major milestone in our joint commitment to advancing the UAE’s sovereign, secure and sustainable Cyber Security ecosystem. Together, we combine our complementary expertise and shared ambition to shape the future of Cyber Security, starting with the Space domain.”
Expanding Horizons Beyond Space
Through the Cyber Centre of Excellence, Thales and the Cyber Security Council plan to harness joint research, development, and innovation to not only enhance existing cybersecurity capabilities in the UAE but also to explore new opportunities. Their collaboration aims to extend into other strategic sectors beyond just space, tackling international markets while addressing cybersecurity challenges on multiple fronts.
In summary, this partnership is poised to establish the UAE as a regional leader in cybersecurity, particularly in the burgeoning field of space technology, while cultivating homegrown expertise to face current and future challenges in the digital arena.
