KAUST and Fincantieri Collaborate on Scholarship for Maritime Security Research
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a leading research institution in the Middle East, has teamed up with Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups, to create a scholarship program aimed at young researchers. This initiative is focused on advancing knowledge in maritime security, cyber-resilience, and emerging technologies related to navigation.
A Shared Vision for Innovation
The establishment of this scholarship stems from a memorandum of understanding signed last January, symbolizing both institutions’ dedication to enhancing education and facilitating technology transfer. This partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, designed to diversify the economy and develop local talent. The scholarship aims to empower talented individuals to devise innovative strategies to counteract contemporary threats to navigation, particularly the alarming issues of AIS (Automatic Identification System) and GPS spoofing, which pose significant risks to safe maritime operations.
Areas of Focus
This scholarship will support research in three critical areas:
- Advanced Authentication of AIS Signals: Protecting vessel identity and location data from manipulation.
- Detection of GPS Spoofing: Utilizing intelligent satellite data analysis to recognize unauthorized position alterations.
- Star-Based Position Verification: Employing machine learning algorithms to enhance accuracy and reliability.
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to develop a robust software platform that could be integrated into onboard digital systems. This integration is expected to foster a stronger partnership between academia and industry, as well as contribute to the evolution of the Fincantieri Digital Ecosystem.

This scholarship has the potential to develop new, intelligent shipping platforms that effectively mitigate cybersecurity risks.
