Seattle Public Library Cyberattack Highlights Importance of Cybersecurity Measures

The Seattle Public Library was recently targeted in a cyberattack that has disrupted access to several key services, including staff and public computers, e-books and e-audiobooks, in-house Wi-Fi, online catalog and loaning systems, and the library’s website. While physical book loans and in-person events are still operational, the online resources remain unavailable as the library works to restore its systems.

Nick Brigmon, Security Operations and Support Manager at Blumira, emphasized the importance of proactive cybersecurity measures for local libraries in light of recent attacks on institutions like the Seattle Public Library. He highlighted the need for libraries to prioritize cybersecurity to protect valuable resources and information, even though they may not typically view themselves as prime targets for cyberattacks.

To help libraries enhance their cybersecurity defenses, Brigmon suggested three key steps: conducting a comprehensive cybersecurity assessment to identify vulnerabilities, providing cybersecurity training for all staff members to recognize and report suspicious activities, and developing an incident response plan to address potential breaches effectively. By taking these proactive measures, libraries can safeguard patrons’ information and ensure uninterrupted services for their communities.
