Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Roche Diagnostics Strengthen Cancer Diagnosis with Nationwide Digital Pathology Initiative
Introduction of Digital Pathology Program
Cairo, Egypt – The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Roche Diagnostics to implement a nationwide Digital Pathology program. This initiative aims to enhance diagnostic capabilities and ensure timely and accurate cancer diagnoses across all governorates, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Prof. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, and H.E. Mr. Thomas Baumgartner, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt. The event underscored the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors to address national healthcare priorities.
Enhancing Diagnostic Capacity
The agreement builds upon the ongoing partnership between the Ministry and Roche Diagnostics, facilitating the integration of digital pathology into public healthcare services. Digital pathology converts pathology samples into high-resolution digital images, allowing for secure sharing and expert review. This technology accelerates diagnosis, improves accuracy, and expands access to specialized expertise, especially in areas where pathology consultants are scarce.
Digital pathology addresses a significant challenge in healthcare systems across Africa, where the ratio of pathologists is approximately one per million people, compared to one per 25,000 in the United States and the United Kingdom. This disparity contributes to diagnostic delays and increased pressure on public healthcare resources.
Centralized Digital Pathology Network
The program will be centralized at the Egyptian Center for Disease Control (CDC), which will act as the hub for the Digital Pathology network. Multiple sites across various governorates will connect to this network, enabling primary diagnoses and facilitating rapid access to second opinions. This setup aims to ensure consistent diagnostic quality and expedite decision-making within the public healthcare system.
The Digital Pathology Center of Excellence is equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies, including Roche’s Ventana Digital Pathology scanner. This high-capacity scanner can process up to 480 slides per day, with scan times of less than 36 seconds per slide, thereby enhancing laboratory workflow efficiency.
Focus on Women’s Health Initiatives
This initiative aligns closely with the Presidential Women’s Health Initiatives, particularly regarding breast cancer. Roche has been instrumental in supporting diagnosis and treatment pathways through its collaboration with Egyptian health authorities. Since the initiative’s inception in 2019, it has recorded over 65.6 million medical visits, delivered more than 446,000 mammograms, analyzed over 51,000 tumor samples, and identified approximately 33,500 breast cancer cases. Furthermore, it has generated over 823,000 referrals for advanced diagnostic and treatment services nationwide.
Advancements in AI and Diagnostic Performance
Peer-reviewed studies in breast cancer digital pathology indicate that AI-supported image analysis significantly enhances diagnostic performance. Research has shown sensitivity rates exceeding 90% for lymph node metastasis detection, which can rise to nearly 99% when combined with expert pathologist review. Additional studies have demonstrated high concordance between AI-supported analysis and expert pathologists in assessing breast cancer biomarkers, leading to more consistent and reproducible diagnostic interpretations.
Tour of CDC Facilities
During the event, attendees toured the CDC facilities in Imbaba, which included the Digital Pathology laboratory and the Complete Genomic Profiling (CGP) laboratory. Demonstrations of digital pathology workflows and AI-supported image analysis were conducted, showcasing the capabilities of the new technologies.
