Merck Foundation and First Ladies of Africa and Asia Strengthen Women’s Empowerment on International Women’s Day 2026

On March 8, 2026, the Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, alongside the First Ladies of Africa and Asia, commemorated International Women’s Day. This event highlighted a 14-year commitment to empowering women, particularly those facing infertility, and promoting girl education through various transformative programs.

A Legacy of Empowerment

The Merck Foundation has established itself as a key player in women’s empowerment initiatives. Through partnerships with Ministries of Health, Education, and Gender, the foundation has implemented impactful programs that address critical issues faced by women and girls. Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of the Merck Foundation, emphasized that the foundation’s mission extends beyond a single day of recognition. She stated that empowering women and girls is integral to their operations, shaping their vision and guiding their initiatives.

Educational Initiatives

Education is a cornerstone of the Merck Foundation’s approach to women’s empowerment. The foundation’s “Educating Linda” program has provided over 1,200 scholarships to underprivileged African schoolgirls from 19 countries, enabling them to pursue their education and achieve their potential. Dr. Kelej noted that these efforts are designed to break down barriers and foster confidence among young women.

Healthcare Scholarships

The Merck Foundation’s scholarship program has transformed healthcare across Africa and Asia, offering more than 2,500 scholarships in 44 critical medical specialties. Nearly 50% of these scholarships have been awarded to women medical graduates, empowering them to become future healthcare leaders. Additionally, over 770 scholarships have been dedicated to advancing women’s health by enhancing reproductive and sexual health care capacities.

Promoting Science and Technology

The foundation actively promotes women’s participation in science and technology through its STEM Program and the annual Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit (MARS) Awards. These initiatives recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions from African women researchers and young scientists, aiming to enhance their research capabilities and foster innovation in STEM fields.

Raising Awareness Through Creative Initiatives

To further raise awareness about women’s empowerment and girl education, the Merck Foundation collaborates with First Ladies of Africa and Asia to announce annual awards in media, song, film, and fashion. These awards aim to address pressing issues such as infertility stigma, female genital mutilation, child marriage, and gender-based violence. The foundation also engages in creative outreach through children’s storybooks, animation films, and awareness songs, promoting the importance of education for girls.

As reported by www.zawya.com, the Merck Foundation continues to leverage various platforms to amplify its message, including its “Our Africa by Merck Foundation” TV program, which features episodes focused on supporting girl education.

Conclusion

The Merck Foundation’s initiatives reflect a sustained commitment to empowering women and girls across Africa and Asia. Through educational scholarships, healthcare training, and advocacy in science and technology, the foundation aims to create a more equitable future for women. By collaborating with influential leaders and leveraging creative platforms, the Merck Foundation is making significant strides in promoting women’s rights and education on a global scale.
