OpenAI Delays Rollout of “Voice Mode” Feature for ChatGPT Amid Safety Concerns

OpenAI’s much-anticipated “Voice Mode” feature for ChatGPT has hit a roadblock, with the company announcing a one-month delay due to safety concerns. This decision has raised eyebrows among experts, who are closely monitoring the situation.

The delay comes after OpenAI introduced a new safety and security committee to oversee its projects, raising questions about the committee’s involvement in the postponement. The company cited the need to improve the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content as a reason for the delay.

ChatGPT’s ‘Voice Mode’ was unveiled as part of the GPT-4o system, which boasts significant advancements in human-computer interaction. The feature promises real-time conversations with human-like emotional responses, but concerns have been raised about potential manipulation and the spread of misinformation.

The delay also follows a controversy involving actress Scarlett Johansson, who accused OpenAI of using her voice without permission in demonstrations of the technology. OpenAI denied the claim, stating that the voice of “Sky” – one of the voices offered by the Voice Mode – belonged to a voice artist and not Johansson.

Furthermore, OpenAI’s partnership with Apple for integrating ChatGPT into Apple devices faces uncertainty due to regulatory hurdles under the EU’s Digital Markets Act. This adds another layer of complication to OpenAI’s challenges surrounding the rollout of the Voice Mode feature.

As the technology evolves, experts in cybersecurity and regulation will be closely monitoring the implications of these developments on responsible AI development. The delay and controversies surrounding Voice Mode highlight the complex landscape of AI ethics and safety in the era of synthetic media and deepfakes.
