SC Orders CBI Inquiry Into ₹1,270 Crore Public Works Contracts Linked To Arunachal CM Pema Khandu’s Family

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioners, emphasized that these companies have received lucrative government contracts for public infrastructure and development without adhering to proper tendering processes.
The PIL details that 31 contracts were awarded to Brand Eagles, a firm owned by Khandu’s wife, over an 11-year period. Additionally, another company, Frontier Associates, reportedly owned by Khandu, was awarded 91 contracts worth ₹145 crore. The petitioners assert that a total of 121 works, amounting to ₹245 crore, were awarded through tenders, while 322 works worth ₹25 crore were granted without any tender process.
Further affidavits indicate that firms associated with Khandu’s family received a disproportionate share of contracts, with around 3% of the state’s total government contracts allegedly directed to them. Bhushan noted that these companies have amassed substantial work orders over the last decade, raising serious concerns about the transparency and legitimacy of the tendering process.
Calls for Independent Investigation
The petitioners have expressed skepticism regarding the impartiality of the state police in investigating these allegations, given Khandu’s political position. Bhushan stated, “These 15 firms, with direct connections to Khandu’s family, have been receiving government contracts in a highly disproportionate manner. The situation reeks of corruption, and an independent investigation is necessary.”

Additionally, the Court has mandated that the Arunachal Pradesh government appoint a nodal officer responsible for facilitating the timely sharing of relevant documents and records with the CBI. The state government has been given a one-week deadline to comply with this order.
