Global Cyberattack Levels Reach Unprecedented Heights in Q2 2024

The global cybersecurity landscape is facing unprecedented challenges as cybercriminals leverage advanced technologies like AI and machine learning to launch a record number of cyberattacks in the second quarter of 2024. According to a report by Check Point Research, the number of cyberattacks has surged by 25% compared to the first quarter, with an average of 1636 attacks targeting every organization weekly.

The education and research sector is particularly vulnerable, with an average of 3,341 cyberattacks per week, followed by government and military organizations (2,084 attacks per week) and healthcare (1,999 attacks per week). Hackers target hospitals for valuable information like health insurance details and medical records, exploiting their perceived lack of cybersecurity resources.

Geographically, Africa and Latin America have seen a significant increase in cyberattacks, with Africa experiencing nearly 3,000 attacks per week and Latin America facing 2,667 attacks per week. North America, on the other hand, reported the lowest number of cyberattacks per week but was hit hardest by ransomware attacks, with 58% of public extortion incidents targeting organizations in the region.

Check Point emphasizes the urgent need for robust cybersecurity frameworks to combat the evolving threat landscape. With ransomware incidents on the rise globally, organizations must prioritize cybersecurity and implement tailored strategies to defend against cyber threats. The time to act is now before the next wave of attacks strikes.
