French Cyber Security Agency Warns of Inevitable Ransomware Attacks at Olympics

With the French government issuing a warning that ransomware attacks targeting the Olympics are ‘inevitable’, a recent study by ExtraHop sheds light on the alarming increase in ransomware attacks in France. The research shows that France has experienced the second most ransomware attacks in the past year, just behind the US. Organizations in France have faced an average of more than nine ransomware incidents, collectively paying nearly $2 million in ransoms.

Mark Bowling, Chief Information Security and Risk Officer at ExtraHop, expressed concerns about the heightened cyber threat landscape surrounding the Olympics. He emphasized the need for organizations associated with government services, critical infrastructure, and entertainment to stay vigilant and be prepared for potential cyber threats to avoid financial loss and geopolitical embarrassment.

The French government’s cyber security agency has been actively preparing for potential cyber-attacks at the Games, identifying various threats ranging from criminal groups to state-sponsored actors. While the agency remains confident in the security measures in place, they acknowledge that it may be unrealistic to prevent all attacks.

Security teams are advised to have contingency plans in place and to address any security blind spots that could be exploited by attackers. With the Games drawing millions of visitors and a complex geopolitical landscape, the need for robust cybersecurity measures is more critical than ever. Stay tuned for more updates on the cybersecurity landscape surrounding the Olympics.
