NanoCarbonX Secures Exclusive License to Boost UAE‘s Graphene Production Capacity to 960 Tonnes Annually
In a significant advancement for the UAE’s manufacturing landscape, NanoCarbonX, a subsidiary of The Nano Company, has entered into a strategic manufacturing agreement with Graphene Star. This partnership aims to establish a fully localized graphene production facility in the UAE, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s ambition to develop sovereign nanomaterials manufacturing capabilities.
Establishing a Localized Production Facility
The agreement, formalized during the Make it in the Emirates 2026 event, grants NanoCarbonX an exclusive license to produce Graphene Star’s patented graphene technology. This initiative is set to establish a manufacturing facility in the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), with an annual production capacity of up to 960 tonnes. The facility is designed to be scalable, enabling it to meet the increasing demand as the adoption of graphene technology accelerates.
The production will cater to four key sectors within the UAE economy: paints and coatings, concrete and construction, polymers, and battery and energy storage. As the company looks to the future, it plans to further enhance its production capacity through strategic partnerships and long-term collaborations with local stakeholders.
Strengthening National Industrial Capability
By developing domestic graphene manufacturing capabilities, the UAE positions itself among a select group of nations capable of producing advanced nanomaterials at an industrial scale. This facility will not only supply local industries but also serve export markets, thereby reinforcing the UAE’s role as a competitive player in the global advanced manufacturing arena. The establishment of local production is expected to shorten supply chains, provide greater certainty for downstream partners, and enable a more responsive approach to market demands without reliance on international sourcing.
Osama Fadhel, Assistant Under-Secretary of Industrial Accelerators at the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, emphasized the importance of this agreement. He stated that the UAE’s industrial strategy is predicated on the development of advanced manufacturing capabilities domestically. The collaboration between NanoCarbonX and Graphene Star is anticipated to bring proprietary technology and production capacity into the UAE, fostering job creation and expertise development while ensuring local industries have access to advanced materials.
Investment and Technological Advancements
The Nano Company has made a direct investment in Graphene Star, securing exclusive access to the intellectual property and technical knowledge necessary for domestic graphene production. This commitment is underscored by a clear timeline, with the first product delivery targeted for the second quarter of 2027.
Anwar Nusseibeh, Chairman of The Nano Company, articulated the significance of this agreement, noting that it marks the transition of NanoCarbonX from development to production. The company has identified its facility location in Abu Dhabi and planned for scalability with the potential for four production lines. Nusseibeh highlighted the UAE’s strategic advantages, including its location, industrial infrastructure, and government support, positioning the nation to become a global hub for nanomaterials manufacturing.
Sustainable Production Methods
NanoCarbonX will leverage technology transfer from Graphene Star, utilizing a proprietary green production method that eliminates harsh chemicals and significantly reduces energy consumption compared to traditional graphene manufacturing processes. This approach positions the facility as one of the most sustainable advanced materials production operations in the region, aligning with the UAE’s objectives for industrial diversification and sustainability.
Marina Starkova, CEO of Graphene Star, remarked on the industrial scale of their graphene technology. She expressed confidence in NanoCarbonX and The Nano Company’s capabilities to establish local production efficiently and sustainably. The exclusive license reflects a shared belief in the potential of this partnership to realize the full industrial capabilities of graphene technology.
A Comprehensive Ecosystem for Graphene Commercialization
The manufacturing agreement is part of a broader ecosystem that The Nano Company and NanoCarbonX are developing around graphene commercialization in the UAE. This convergence of efforts represents a complete value chain, including patented technology licensed and transferred into the UAE, a dedicated production facility at KEZAD, academic validation, workforce development, and established commercial partnerships with major industrial offtakers. Together, these initiatives position the UAE not only as a consumer of advanced nanomaterials but also as a producer and exporter, equipped with the necessary infrastructure, technology, and talent to compete on a global scale.
