National MS Society Strengthens Community Support Across UAE for World MS Day
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) is launching a nationwide awareness campaign for World MS Day, marking its fourth consecutive year of engaging communities across the UAE. This initiative aims to foster dialogue, enhance understanding, and amplify support for individuals living with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease affecting the central nervous system.
The campaign encompasses healthcare facilities, workplaces, and community spaces, integrating educational resources and public activations. These efforts are designed to promote open discussions about MS and the realities faced by those living with the condition.
Navigating MS Together: A Focus on Diagnosis
This year’s World MS Day theme, “My MS Diagnosis: Navigating MS Together,” emphasizes the experiences associated with receiving an MS diagnosis. The campaign highlights the necessity for accessible information, practical guidance, and robust support systems that individuals require following their diagnosis.
Through various community activations and educational initiatives, NMSS aims to cultivate informed conversations about MS, thereby enhancing public understanding of the condition. Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice Chair of NMSS, articulated the significance of community support, stating that living with MS is a journey that should not be undertaken alone. She emphasized the collective strength of communities, families, and caregivers in shaping this journey.
Practical Resources for Support
As part of the campaign, NMSS has introduced a suite of practical resources tailored to assist individuals at different stages of their MS journey. One notable resource is the Talking About Your MS Diagnosis Guide, designed to empower individuals in navigating conversations about their diagnosis with family, friends, and colleagues. This guide includes practical advice and exercises to facilitate open communication.
Acknowledging the vital role of caregivers, NMSS has also developed a guide specifically for Empowering Carers, providing essential information and guidance for those supporting individuals with MS and other chronic conditions. Additionally, an HR Guide has been created to assist human resources teams and employers in understanding MS and fostering inclusive workplace environments. This guide, endorsed by The Butterfly, a leading organization specializing in inclusion and accessibility, offers practical insights on workplace adjustments that can benefit employees living with MS.
These resources are not only designed for those with MS but also serve to assist individuals discussing other chronic conditions.
Expanding Awareness Through Healthcare Facilities
The campaign’s resources are part of a broader awareness initiative being implemented across more than 30 healthcare facilities and partner networks in the UAE. This effort aims to enhance the visibility and accessibility of MS support resources within clinical settings, thereby improving community understanding of the condition.
In line with its educational efforts, NMSS will host an online webinar on June 5, 2026, focusing on practical wellbeing strategies and ongoing research in the UAE aimed at supporting individuals living with MS and their families. This public session will feature experts from various fields, including nutrition and mental health, discussing the realities of living with MS and the importance of comprehensive support systems.
Community Engagement Through Activations
The initiative extends beyond healthcare and educational settings into community spaces. A café activation themed “Carry It Forward” will occur at over 30 participating locations in the UAE on May 30 and 31. This activation aims to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis and foster open conversations and community support for those living with the condition.
Furthermore, the campaign will include landmark illuminations across the UAE to enhance visibility and awareness of MS. Through this nationwide effort, NMSS seeks to encourage open discussions about MS and reinforce the understanding of the realities faced by individuals living with the condition, reminding them that they are not alone in their journey.
