Introducing Friend: The $99 AI Necklace Listening to Your Conversations

Friend, a startup founded by Harvard dropout Avi Schiffmann, has made waves in the tech world with the launch of a groundbreaking AI necklace priced at $99. The necklace, designed to combat loneliness, listens to all of a user’s conversations when connected to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth.

The startup managed to secure a $2.5 million investment from tech industry heavyweights, including Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas and Solana founders Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal. Schiffmann even went as far as borrowing $1.8 million to acquire the domain friend.com, stating that it was a necessary investment for a product like this.

Users can now preorder the AI necklace on friend.com, with shipments expected to begin in Q1 2025. The device allows users to speak to it by pressing a button on the necklace, with responses sent via text message to the connected smartphone. Friend can also initiate conversations on its own, providing a unique interactive experience.

While similar virtual AI friends exist on various platforms, Friend’s hardware approach aims to make conversations more engaging and personal. However, concerns about privacy have been raised, as the device will record personal data such as names and addresses. Friend assures users that all conversations will be encrypted and not stored beyond a certain timeframe.

With the promise of combating loneliness through innovative technology, Friend’s AI necklace is set to revolutionize the way we interact with AI companions.
