The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fundamentally altering the landscape of data centres, particularly in the UAE and the broader Middle East. As organizations invest heavily in AI-ready digital infrastructure, the demand for high-performance computing systems capable of supporting GPU-intensive workloads is surging. This transformation brings forth significant challenges related to power consumption, heat management, sustainability, and operational resilience.

The Surge in AI Demand

Kamel Al Tawil, Managing Director for MENA at Equinix, highlights that the increasing adoption of AI technologies is reshaping data centre design and operational strategies. The UAE’s data centres consumed approximately 3 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2025, accounting for around 2% of the nation’s total electricity demand of 173 TWh. This figure is expected to rise as AI applications proliferate across various sectors, necessitating robust infrastructure to manage escalating power densities.

Traditional data centre architectures, originally designed for significantly lower rack densities, are struggling to meet the thermal requirements of modern AI environments. The shift towards AI is accelerating the adoption of advanced cooling technologies, particularly liquid cooling, which has emerged as a critical component for next-generation AI infrastructure.

Challenges of Traditional Cooling Systems

The limitations of traditional air cooling systems are becoming increasingly apparent as GPU clusters reach higher thermal loads. Modern GPUs can exceed 200 kilowatts per rack, with projections suggesting they may reach up to 1 megawatt in the near future. In contrast, earlier data centre designs typically supported only 5-10 kilowatts per rack. This dramatic increase in power density renders air cooling inadequate.

Liquid cooling systems present a more effective solution. By utilizing liquids such as water or refrigerants, these systems can be positioned closer to heat sources, enabling them to dissipate heat more efficiently. This approach not only supports higher-density environments but also reduces energy consumption and reliance on fan power. Advances in piping technology further mitigate operational risks, significantly lowering the likelihood of leaks.

Integrating Liquid Cooling Technologies

Implementing liquid cooling requires careful integration into the overall AI and infrastructure strategy. Decisions regarding cooling technologies should be made early in the design process, as they directly influence an organization’s ability to scale high-density AI workloads. Retrofitting existing environments for liquid cooling can be complex and costly; thus, designing new facilities with this capability in mind is advisable.

Equinix ensures that all new data centres are designed to accommodate liquid cooling from the outset. This proactive approach allows for seamless integration with the broader ecosystem, including customers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and colocation providers. Proper coordination of specifications such as temperature, pressure, and flow is essential for optimal performance.

Balancing Demand with Sustainability

As regulations governing data centre operations become more stringent, operators face the challenge of balancing rising AI compute demands with energy efficiency, sustainability, and compliance. The need for adherence to evolving sustainability standards is shaping infrastructure design and operational practices.

Liquid cooling emerges as a vital tool in this context, enabling operators to meet increasing power and cooling requirements while enhancing hardware efficiency. This technology supports dematerialization, allows for wider operating temperature ranges, and improves resource efficiency. Additionally, it creates opportunities for heat reuse, enhancing overall data centre performance and reliability.

Supporting the UAE’s AI Ambitions

Advanced cooling technologies will play a crucial role in facilitating the UAE’s ambitions to become a regional hub for AI-ready digital infrastructure. As AI workloads continue to push rack power densities beyond the limits of traditional air-cooled environments, the importance of advanced cooling systems cannot be overstated. These systems will be essential for ensuring long-term infrastructure scalability, operational reliability, and energy efficiency.

Liquid cooling not only reduces dependence on energy-intensive air cooling systems but also enhances heat management capabilities, supporting higher power AI deployments. As the UAE continues to scale its AI infrastructure, the integration of advanced cooling solutions will be critical in meeting both current and future demands.
