DP World Strengthens Egypt’s Logistics Sector with Launch of First Integrated Distribution Centre
CAIRO: DP World has officially launched Egypt’s inaugural fully integrated Logistics Distribution Centre (LDC) at Sokhna Logistics Park, a development that signifies a pivotal advancement in the nation’s logistics landscape. This facility is designed to facilitate international companies’ entry into the Egyptian market while simultaneously serving regional and global clientele from a centralized distribution hub.
Strategic Importance of the Logistics Distribution Centre
The launch event was graced by Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, alongside senior government officials and representatives from various international corporations. This occasion coincided with the first visit to Egypt by Essa Kazim, who recently assumed the Chairmanship of DP World. During the event, agreements were signed with the first three global customers poised to utilize the services offered by the LDC.
The LDC provides a comprehensive end-to-end supply chain solution that includes international freight forwarding, port services at Sokhna Port, warehousing, inventory management, order fulfillment, customs facilitation, and transportation coordination. Additionally, it offers value-added services such as assembly, packaging, repackaging, labeling, and product customization. This integrated approach allows companies to efficiently serve local, regional, and international markets from a single location while maintaining ownership of their inventory until final distribution.
Location and Infrastructure
Strategically situated adjacent to Sokhna Port within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the LDC is positioned along one of the world’s most vital trade corridors, granting direct access to both regional and international markets. This geographical advantage enhances Egypt’s appeal as a logistics hub, particularly in the context of increasing global trade dynamics.
Essa Kazim emphasized the significance of this project, stating that it marks a new chapter in DP World’s enduring partnership with Egypt. He highlighted Egypt’s status as a key investment destination in the region and reaffirmed confidence in its potential to evolve into a global trade, industry, and logistics hub. Kazim articulated that the LDC embodies DP World’s vision of creating an integrated ecosystem that connects ports, logistics, and supply chain solutions, thereby facilitating more efficient access to markets.
Growing Confidence in Egypt’s Logistics Sector
The agreements signed during the launch underscore the increasing confidence in Egypt as a regional logistics center. The LDC has already attracted a diverse array of international customers. Among the initial clients is a prominent Kenya-based tea exporter that serves markets across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. This company, which handles approximately 1,000 TEUs annually into Egypt, plans to utilize the facility as a regional inventory hub, thereby enabling more efficient distribution to various international markets.
Another customer, a leading global distributor of consumer goods, will leverage the LDC to support operations across eight markets, including Saudi Arabia, the Levant, and the Horn of Africa. Their operations will be bolstered by a dedicated temperature-controlled facility within Sokhna Logistics Park.
A third client, a German multinational specializing in fiber-optic cables and digital infrastructure solutions, aims to enhance its distribution and re-export capabilities across Egypt, North Africa, and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries through the logistics center.
Enhancing Trade and Logistics Capabilities
Mohammad Shihab, Executive Vice President for Egypt and the Levant at DP World, remarked that the launch of the LDC at Sokhna Logistics Park significantly strengthens Egypt’s trade and logistics capabilities. By positioning inventory closer to customers, businesses can serve multiple markets from a single regional hub. This integrated model enhances efficiency and flexibility, further solidifying Egypt’s role as a strategic gateway connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Shihab expressed gratitude to the Egyptian Government for its support in facilitating this initiative, which is expected to attract investment, stimulate industrial growth, and enhance Egypt’s competitiveness in the global market.
Economic Impact and Future Prospects
The Logistics Distribution Centre is poised to reduce lead times, enhance supply chain resilience, and support business continuity by bringing inventory and raw materials closer to manufacturing centers and end markets. This initiative also strengthens local industries by providing faster and more reliable access to essential inputs and materials, reinforcing Egypt’s position as a regional trade and logistics hub.
DP World has committed over USD 1.4 billion to integrated logistics infrastructure across Egypt. This investment includes the expansion and modernization of Sokhna Port, the development of Sokhna Logistics Park, and the establishment of a new cold chain facility currently under construction.
By integrating DP World’s freight forwarding, contract logistics, and end-to-end supply chain services, this network enables businesses to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve export competitiveness while accessing regional and global markets through seamless trade and logistics solutions.
