This can lead to “false alarm fatigue,” where operators become desensitized to alerts. A more effective strategy involves treating analytics as an integral part of the operational workflow, encapsulated in a five-step model: Detect, Verify, Decide, Act, and Audit. Each step serves a distinct purpose, collectively transforming raw signals into actionable insights.

1. Detect: Designs Focused on Relevance, Not Coverage

Effective detection begins with a clear definition of what constitutes an “actionable” event within the specific context of the site. For instance, the mere presence of a person on camera does not qualify as an operational event. However, this presence becomes actionable when associated with risk factors such as location, time, direction of movement, or duration.

Without a well-defined framework, analytics may generate a high volume of alerts that lack real value. Enhancing relevance often involves categorizing areas based on risk levels and applying temporal logic. For example, public spaces, controlled zones, and sterile environments should operate under different sets of rules. Similarly, behaviors acceptable during the day may raise suspicions at night. This approach can significantly reduce false alarms—not by relying on flawless AI but by establishing sensible operational conditions.

2. Verify: Shorten the Path Between Alert and Context

Verification processes must be both rapid and repeatable. If operators are required to manually locate cameras, align playback, and reconstruct sequences, the verification costs become prohibitive. This often leads to delays in action or, worse, the disregard of alerts.

Effective verification provides immediate context, including the relevant camera angle, a brief before-and-after interval, and a clear rationale for why the alert was triggered. When possible, additional contextual information—such as door statuses, schedules, or access logs—should accompany the images, as this can alter the interpretation of the event. The objective is to swiftly ascertain whether an incident warrants further action.

Decision-making in security operations hinges on effective classification. The quality of this classification is contingent upon the system’s ability to differentiate between urgency and impact.

Prioritization improves when it reflects four key realities:

  • Time: Behavior that is acceptable at 2 PM may appear suspicious at 2 AM.
  • Location: Activity at a public entrance differs significantly from that at a restricted area, such as an engine room.
  • Persistence: While brief appearances may be common, prolonged presence often indicates a higher level of concern.
  • Correlation: Two weak indicators can combine to form a significant event when they occur concurrently.

4. Act: Make the Response Consistent

Once verification and classification are complete, operators require a response framework that is both straightforward and defensible. When actions are based on memory, personal judgment, or informal practices, outcomes can vary widely across different shifts and locations.

A professional response model connects each type of alert to a concise response pathway, detailing immediate checks to perform, conditions for escalation, and actions to log. The aim is not to eliminate human judgment but to ensure that it is exercised within a consistent framework, particularly in high-pressure environments where every second is crucial.

5. Audit: Incorporate Evidence and Learning into the Process

Auditing is often perceived as a bureaucratic necessity; however, it serves as a vital operational control. When workflows capture the triggers of events, the verification process, the decisions made, and subsequent actions, organizations gain valuable records that can inform future improvements.
