OpenAI Expands Daybreak Program to Include Specialized Cybersecurity Services

OpenAI has announced an expansion of its Daybreak program, which now includes specialized cybersecurity services aimed at enhancing defensive capabilities. This update, detailed in two blogs, introduces new model variants and a partnership program with major cybersecurity providers, allowing organizations to access advanced AI tools for cybersecurity tasks.

New Model Variants for Cybersecurity

The updated Daybreak program features two new model variants: Daybreak Blue and Daybreak Red. Daybreak Blue, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT-5.6-Sol, is designed for general defensive tasks such as vulnerability discovery and malware analysis, operating with lower cybersecurity safeguards. In contrast, Daybreak Red offers access to GPT-5.6-Cyber, a model specifically trained for advanced red-teaming activities, including vulnerability testing and exploitation.

Monitoring and Supervision of Advanced Tools

OpenAI emphasizes that the use of the GPT-5.6-Cyber model will be closely monitored due to its enhanced capabilities in executing potentially malicious tasks. A security evaluation revealed that while the Sol model succeeded in only 1.5% of complex requests, the Cyber model completed 95%. OpenAI plans to release a detailed system card for GPT-5.6-Cyber in the future.

Partnerships with Major Cybersecurity Firms

In addition to the new models, OpenAI has launched a partnership program with 16 leading cybersecurity providers, including IBM, CrowdStrike, and Accenture. This initiative aims to integrate OpenAI’s frontier models into existing security services, enhancing the ability of organizations to identify and address serious vulnerabilities more efficiently. OpenAI stated that these partnerships leverage deep security expertise and established relationships to bolster cyber defense efforts.

As AI companies like OpenAI navigate the complexities of cybersecurity, they are also addressing concerns regarding the isolation of AI models during testing. Recent incidents involving AI-agent sandbox escapes have prompted calls for better safeguards. OpenAI has indicated a deliberate slowdown in the development of its newer “Astra” model to enhance its guardrails.
