OpenAI Targets AI-Native Growth in UAE with Local Data Residency Initiatives

Dubai — OpenAI is intensifying its focus on the UAE as it seeks to foster AI-native growth through local data residency initiatives. The UAE’s commitment to advancing its national AI ambitions, coupled with an expanding digital infrastructure and a focus on data sovereignty, is driving enterprise adoption across various sectors, including government, banking, energy, aviation, and education. Organizations are increasingly looking to integrate AI into their workflows and public services, moving beyond isolated pilot projects.

Farouk El Hamzawi, Head of Enterprise for OpenAI MENA, discussed the company’s growth priorities in the UAE, emphasizing the role of ChatGPT Work in enhancing productivity and decision-making. He highlighted the significance of local data and inference residency in deploying AI responsibly across regulated sectors. According to El Hamzawi, the UAE stands out globally for its ambitious national strategies, such as the UAE National AI Strategy 2031, which aims to create some of the world’s first truly AI-native institutions.

Key Priorities and Industry Adoption

OpenAI’s current priority is to help translate the UAE’s vision into operational frameworks where AI is not merely an additional tool but a foundational element of organizational processes. With the establishment of UAE Data Residency and UAE Inference Residency, OpenAI is unlocking opportunities with highly regulated entities in banking, energy, and the public sector. The goal is to deepen partnerships and expand access to advanced AI capabilities, positioning the UAE as a global reference point for AI-driven economic growth and improved public services.

Government entities are leading the charge in adopting AI solutions, demonstrating a clear commitment to deploying AI at scale across public services. Beyond the government, sectors such as banking, energy, aviation, and education are also showing strong interest and execution of AI initiatives. Notably, cybersecurity is a significant driver of this momentum, with the UAE facing over 800,000 cyberattacks daily, as reported by the UAE Cyber Security Council.

AI has become an essential capability multiplier to help defensive security teams keep pace with evolving threats.

Enhancing Productivity with ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT Work is designed to help organizations improve business outcomes by facilitating faster execution, stronger collaboration, and better-informed decisions. It integrates with existing workplace tools, enabling employees to access relevant information and apply advanced reasoning to produce actionable work. This approach reduces the time spent on information searches and coordination, allowing teams to focus on expert judgment and innovation.
