Planet Labs, a leading provider of daily data and insights about Earth, has made significant strides in urban planning initiatives with the government of Bahrain. Leveraging their SkySat data, the Kingdom’s Survey and Land Registration Bureau (SLRB) has partnered with Planet Labs to implement an advanced urban planning system.

This innovative system integrates AI-enabled change detection technology with Planet’s high-resolution satellite imagery, offering a sophisticated approach to modern urban management. Covering 850 sq kilometers, the system developed by Planet’s partner, Aetosky, enables government authorities in Bahrain to monitor and categorize changes in the region with precision.

By utilizing Planet’s SkySat 50 cm satellite imagery, the government of Bahrain has improved building permit validation activities, leading to more efficient urban management and planning. Will Marshall, CEO and co-founder of Planet, praised Bahrain for embracing smart city planning through cutting-edge satellite data and AI technology.

The implementation of change detection using satellite data has revolutionized urban planning in Bahrain, providing essential data for informed decision-making and sustainable growth. With bi-weekly updates and AI-enhanced analysis, the SLRB now serves as a central hub for various government departments, addressing environmental monitoring, transportation, and municipal response.

This collaborative approach aligns with smart city principles, promoting efficiency, resilience, and environmentally friendly urban spaces. The partnership between Planet Labs and the government of Bahrain exemplifies the potential of satellite data in shaping the cities of the future.
