The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has announced the finalization of new regulations that could grant the federal government significant control over mail-in ballots for voters. This development comes as part of an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump in March, which mandates USPS to create lists of residents deemed “eligible” for mail-in voting, with criteria set by the federal government. The regulations have faced legal challenges, having been struck down by multiple lower courts, but the White House is appealing these decisions to the Supreme Court while proceeding with the finalization of the rules.

According to a notice from USPS, the agency must implement these changes in time for the upcoming mid-term elections, stating, “To ensure the faithful execution of federal law in connection with federal elections, this rule has an immediate effective date.” The 2026 general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026, and USPS emphasizes that delaying the effective date could jeopardize the implementation of these rules.

In response to the proposed rule, USPS has received approximately 200,000 public comments, although it has not disclosed how many were supportive or opposed. Supporters argue that the regulations would enhance voter confidence regarding election integrity, despite the lack of credible evidence supporting claims of widespread mail-in voter fraud. Critics, including some voting groups, have expressed concerns that the new rules could lead to voter confusion and undermine state-led voting processes.
