The US Department of Defense has announced plans to expand contractor access to classified workspaces through a new initiative called the “Secure Space Network,” according to reporting by Breaking Defense. The effort, led by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment’s Office of Industrial Base Growth, aims to deploy approximately 50 Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) across the United States.

Expanding Access to Classified Facilities

The Secure Space Network is intended to address longstanding challenges faced by contractors, particularly small businesses, in accessing secure environments required for classified work. SCIFs are specialized spaces certified to meet security standards set by the Director of National Intelligence, designed to protect sensitive compartmented information from physical, audio, and electronic threats.

James R. Mismash, Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Growth and Director of the Office of Small Business Programs, stated that industry partners have identified limited access to classified environments as a significant barrier to participation in defense projects. The new initiative is intended to lower this barrier, enabling more companies to contribute to Pentagon missions.

Deployment and Scalability

According to the Pentagon’s announcement, the initial phase will focus on creating a repeatable capability for establishing secure facilities, with the potential to expand as requirements grow. The Secure Space Network is also intended to provide scalable production capacity, allowing for a rapid increase in accredited security workspaces if needed.

The facilities may be located at military installations, industry-focused sites such as APEX Accelerators, or other mission-relevant locations. The department has not released specific details regarding the size of each SCIF, program funding, or the implementation timeline.
