The 87th meeting of the GCC Central Bank Governors Committee, chaired by Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) Governor Khalid Humaidan, took place recently in Bahrain. This gathering brought together central bank governors from across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, alongside GCC Secretary-General Jassim Al Budaiwi, as part of Bahrain’s presidency of the 46th Session of the GCC.

Strengthening Regional Coordination

During the meeting, Governor Humaidan emphasized the importance of regional cooperation among member nations, highlighting that such collaboration is vital for maintaining monetary and financial stability. He noted the rapid evolution of the GCC’s banking and financial sector, which plays a crucial role in driving economic growth and supporting sustainable development.

Key Initiatives and Cybersecurity Focus

The discussions at the meeting centered on several key initiatives aimed at enhancing economic integration within the region. The governors reviewed the progress of the regional payment systems implementation plan and explored methods to improve joint supervision and oversight across the banking sector. A significant focus was placed on aligning financial technology initiatives and enhancing the exchange of banking cybersecurity intelligence among member states.

Additionally, the committee addressed ongoing efforts to combat money laundering and counter the financing of terrorism, recognizing the need for coordinated strategies in these areas. The integration of financial and cybersecurity measures is seen as essential for safeguarding the region’s financial systems against emerging threats.

This meeting underscores the GCC’s commitment to not only advancing economic integration but also ensuring that cybersecurity measures are robust and collaborative across member states. As the financial landscape continues to evolve, the emphasis on cybersecurity will be crucial in protecting the integrity of the region’s banking systems.
