Exail unveils Neptis uncrewed maritime surveillance system with advanced command-and-control capabilities

Published:

Exail has unveiled its Neptis uncrewed maritime surveillance system at the Euronaval press tour, integrating Oryx-family uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) with advanced command-and-control capabilities. This system is designed for a range of missions, including maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure, highlighting its operational versatility in high-threat environments.

System Architecture and Capabilities

Described as a “system of systems,” Neptis facilitates persistent operations in maritime areas where access is restricted. The Oryx vessels are equipped with various sensors that gather data, while the Neptis command-and-control software manages platform supervision and communications, providing operators with a comprehensive operational picture. This architecture allows for the sharing of relevant tracks and mission information with naval command authorities, enhancing decision-making processes.

The initial capabilities demonstrated include platform supervision, tactical track visualization, and operator-led preliminary assessments. Future enhancements, such as mission planning, advanced data fusion, and interoperability with existing command systems, are planned to be tailored to customer specifications.

Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Missions

Neptis is equipped for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, which encompass monitoring critical maritime routes, strategic passages, and exclusive economic zone boundaries. The system integrates data from various sensors, including radar, electro-optical/infrared, and electronic warfare systems, to create a detailed surface picture and identify unusual maritime behavior.

For anti-submarine warfare, the Oryx vessels can be outfitted with acoustic payloads, including towed sensors, which extend the operational range of acoustic detection. This capability allows crewed anti-submarine units to focus on classification and response tasks, enhancing overall mission effectiveness.

Protection of Critical Underwater Infrastructure

Neptis also plays a crucial role in protecting critical underwater infrastructure, such as subsea cables, pipelines, and offshore energy installations. The system’s configuration can combine persistent surface presence with underwater sensing and anomaly detection, enabling coordinated operations with other uncrewed assets.

Additional missions include safeguarding naval bases, high-value vessels, and gathering environmental data prior to amphibious operations. The Oryx vessels are designed to detect and track low-altitude airborne threats, relaying validated tracks to command-and-control and air-defense units.

Operational Flexibility and Future Developments

The Neptis platform comprises three Oryx models, each tailored for specific operational needs. The compact Oryx H-8 is designed for rapid deployment and local force protection, while the mid-sized Oryx H-9 is suited for multi-sensor missions. The larger Oryx O-16 is intended for long-duration offshore operations, capable of carrying heavy mission payloads, including advanced sonar systems.

Exail’s experience with its civil DriX platforms informs the design of the Oryx family, which has participated in various naval exercises, including those with the U.S. Navy and NATO. Neptis can be operated from shore or ship, maintaining human command for critical mission approvals and retasking. Each customer configuration will define specific requirements for data processing, secure communications, and integration with existing naval networks.

To support the anticipated demand for its USVs, Exail plans to open a new production facility in southern France, which will enhance its manufacturing capacity and streamline the delivery of these advanced maritime systems.
