Coast Guard orders four MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones for $248 million to enhance maritime surveillance capabilities

Published:

In a significant move to enhance its maritime surveillance capabilities, the U.S. Coast Guard has placed an order for four MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones, valued at approximately $248 million. This acquisition marks the first time the Coast Guard will utilize these advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are expected to bolster operations in overseeing offshore waters, conducting search and rescue missions, and countering drug trafficking efforts.

The MQ-9B SeaGuardian, developed by General Atomics, is designed for extended intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, boasting a mission endurance of over 30 hours and a range of approximately 1,200 nautical miles. According to Anthony Antognoli, the assistant commandant and program executive officer for robotics and autonomous systems at the Coast Guard, this investment will significantly enhance the service’s operational reach and decision-making capabilities. “This investment will give Coast Guard crews a longer-range view of our maritime domain, helping them detect threats earlier, make better-informed decisions and act faster across our missions,” he stated.

The funding for this procurement stems from the FY25 reconciliation package, which allocated nearly $25 billion to the Coast Guard, alongside FY26 appropriations. The total cost of the MQ-9B acquisition includes ground control stations and other supporting equipment, emphasizing the Coast Guard’s commitment to modernizing its operational capabilities.

Operational Context and Previous Collaborations

Prior to this acquisition, the Coast Guard had collaborated with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), utilizing CBP’s MQ-9A drones for various operations. This partnership has proven effective, with the Coast Guard reporting significant successes, including the seizure of over 60,700 pounds of illegal drugs and the apprehension of approximately 20 smugglers in FY26. The operational experience gained from these previous missions likely informed the decision to integrate the MQ-9B into the Coast Guard’s fleet.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

The MQ-9B SeaGuardian is equipped with advanced sensors and communication systems, enabling it to perform a variety of missions, including maritime patrol, search and rescue, and environmental monitoring. Its long endurance and extensive range make it particularly suited for operations in vast maritime environments, where traditional assets may be limited. The aircraft is not expected to carry weapons, focusing instead on surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

This acquisition aligns with broader trends in defense modernization, where unmanned systems are increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance situational awareness and operational effectiveness. The integration of the MQ-9B into the Coast Guard’s operational framework represents a strategic step towards leveraging advanced technology for maritime security.

As the Coast Guard prepares to integrate these drones into its operations, the implications for maritime surveillance and law enforcement are significant. The enhanced capabilities offered by the MQ-9B SeaGuardian will likely improve the Coast Guard’s ability to respond to emerging threats and challenges in the maritime domain.
