Teledyne FLIR Defense unveils Ranger R10-3DX compact radar for counter-UAS operations

Published:

Teledyne FLIR Defense has introduced the Ranger R10-3DX, a compact radar system designed specifically for counter-unmanned aerial system (CUAS) operations. This new technology aims to enhance detection and tracking capabilities against the growing threat posed by small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across various critical infrastructures, including military installations, airports, and border security operations.

According to Teledyne FLIR Defense, the Ranger R10-3DX is engineered to support a wide range of missions, including force protection and coastal surveillance. Rob Tarantino, the company’s senior vice president of surveillance, emphasized the increasing security challenges that small UAVs present, stating, “The Ranger R10-3DX gives operators an affordable, compact, and highly capable radar solution that delivers the early warning and tracking performance needed to counter evolving drone threats.”

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

The Ranger R10-3DX employs advanced digital beam-forming technology, which allows for continuous wide-area coverage and rapid threat detection. This capability is particularly crucial in environments where timely responses to UAV incursions are necessary. The system integrates artificial intelligence to enhance target classification, enabling it to track multiple targets simultaneously and differentiate between drones, aircraft, birds, people, and vehicles.

In terms of detection range, the Ranger R10-3DX can identify micro drones at distances of up to three kilometers (approximately 1.86 miles), pedestrians beyond six kilometers, and vehicles at over 12 kilometers. This extensive range makes it suitable for both fixed-site installations and mobile platforms, adaptable to various operational environments, including austere conditions.

Operational Significance

The introduction of the Ranger R10-3DX reflects a growing recognition of the need for effective countermeasures against UAV threats, which have become increasingly prevalent in both military and civilian contexts. As drone technology evolves, so too must the systems designed to detect and neutralize these threats. The compact nature of the Ranger R10-3DX allows for deployment in diverse scenarios, enhancing situational awareness and response capabilities for security forces.

With its combination of affordability, compact design, and advanced technological features, the Ranger R10-3DX positions itself as a significant asset in the ongoing efforts to secure critical infrastructure from UAV-related risks. As military and security operations continue to adapt to the challenges posed by unmanned systems, innovations like the Ranger R10-3DX will play a crucial role in maintaining operational effectiveness and safety.
