AI agents pose new insider threat risks, warns Bitdefender in upcoming webinar

Published:

Bitdefender has raised alarms about the potential insider threat posed by AI agents operating within corporate networks, highlighting a significant security gap in organizations’ visibility of these tools. In an upcoming webinar titled AI as an Insider Threat: From Shadow AI to Governed AI, expert Richard De La Torre will discuss the implications of unmonitored AI agents that can access sensitive information without oversight.

As AI tools proliferate across various business functions, many organizations lack the necessary visibility to monitor their usage effectively. According to Bitdefender’s 2026 Cybersecurity Assessment report, only 51.8% of organizations have full visibility into the AI tools utilized by their employees. This leaves nearly half of organizations vulnerable to risks associated with “shadow AI,” which refers to unauthorized or unmonitored AI applications that can lead to data breaches. IBM’s findings indicate that 20% of breached organizations were compromised through such shadow AI.

The Challenge of Unseen AI

AI agents, coding assistants, and browser extensions are increasingly integrated into business operations, often without formal approval or oversight. These tools can store sensitive information, such as API keys and database passwords, and operate independently of traditional security measures. The irony lies in the fact that the AI with the most access is often the least visible to security teams, creating a significant risk.

Moving Towards Governed AI

Bitdefender’s research reveals that blocking AI tools outright is not a viable solution, as it often leads to resistance and non-compliance among employees. Instead, the focus should shift towards “governed adoption,” which involves implementing policies and controls that allow for the safe use of AI while mitigating associated risks. The webinar will provide practical strategies for organizations to manage AI tools effectively, ensuring they do not become a liability.

Key Takeaways from the Webinar

  • Understanding where AI is present on endpoints and why existing security tools may not detect it.
  • Insights from Bitdefender Labs on real-world AI usage, including the identification of malicious agents.
  • Recognizing the behavior of AI agents as insider risks and strategies to address them.
  • Exploring the concept of governed adoption as a practical approach to AI management.

As organizations continue to integrate AI into their operations, the need for robust oversight and governance becomes increasingly critical. Join Richard De La Torre in the upcoming webinar to learn how to navigate the complexities of AI as an insider threat and develop a proactive security strategy.
