Cyber Threats in the Middle East: Insights from Positive Technologies Study at GITEX 2024

Positive Technologies, a leading cybersecurity firm, has unveiled alarming findings from its latest study on cyber threats in the Middle East at GITEX 2024. The study revealed a sharp rise in hacktivist attacks in the region, coinciding with escalating geopolitical tensions. Additionally, the Middle East has become a prime target for APT groups, with every second successful attack resulting in a data breach.

Irina Zinovkina, Head of Information Security Analytics Research at Positive Technologies, warned of the increasing threat landscape in the Middle East. She highlighted the shift in conflict strategies, with cyberattacks now playing a pivotal role. Zinovkina also predicted a surge in DDoS attacks on media and government institutions as tensions continue to rise.

Government institutions and the energy sector were the primary targets of cybercriminal groups, aiming to disrupt critical infrastructure and steal confidential data. The study found that 16% of dark web listings for government company information were related to Middle Eastern countries, indicating a lucrative target for cybercriminals.

Malware remained the weapon of choice for cybercriminals, with email phishing attacks skyrocketing by 222% in the second half of 2023. To combat these threats, experts recommend adopting result-driven cybersecurity, a proactive approach that leverages cutting-edge security tools such as SIEM systems, EDR systems, and advanced sandboxes.

With data breaches becoming the most common consequence of cyberattacks in the region, organizations in the Middle East are urged to prioritize cybersecurity measures to safeguard their operations and strategic goals. By implementing result-driven cybersecurity practices, companies can build a robust defence system against cyber threats and ensure their resilience in the face of evolving cyber risks.
