Leicester City Council Confirms Cyberattack: Experts React and Offer Advice

Leicester City Council has fallen victim to a cyberattack, as confirmed by the council’s Strategic Director of City Developments and Neighbourhoods, Richard Sword. The attack, carried out by a known ransomware group, has resulted in the publication of a small number of confidential documents online.

Among the documents compromised are rent statements, applications to purchase council housing, and identification documents such as passport information. This breach of confidential data is a serious matter and has prompted the council to notify the Information Commissioner and reach out to those impacted by the breach.

Cybersecurity experts have weighed in on the incident, highlighting the growing threat of ransomware attacks on public sector entities like Leicester City Council. Darren Williams of Blackfog stressed the importance of investing in anti-data exfiltration tools to prevent future attacks, while Trevor Dearing of Illumio emphasized the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in light of the escalating cyber threats faced by local councils.

Stephen Robinson of WithSecure underscored the importance of improving cyber-resilience among local councils through regular risk assessments and a strong cybersecurity culture. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by public sector organizations in the digital age, urging a more proactive approach to cybersecurity to safeguard sensitive data and prevent future attacks.
