Thales Teams Develop Deepfake Detection Metamodel to Combat Identity Fraud

In a groundbreaking development, Thales teams have successfully created a metamodel for detecting AI-generated images as part of a challenge organized by France’s Defence Innovation Agency (AID) during the European Cyber Week in Rennes, Brittany. The deepfake detection metamodel is a crucial tool in the fight against identity fraud and image manipulation, especially as the use of AI technologies continues to grow.

AI-generated images, produced by platforms like Midjourney, Dall-E, and Firefly, pose a significant threat as they can be used for identity theft and fraud. Studies have shown that deepfakes could lead to substantial financial losses in the coming years, with Gartner estimating that around 20% of cyberattacks in 2023 may involve deepfake content for disinformation and manipulation campaigns.

Thales’ metamodel utilizes machine learning techniques, decision trees, and evaluations to analyze the authenticity of an image. It incorporates innovative methods such as the CLIP method, which connects images and text to identify inconsistencies, the DNF method, which uses diffusion models to detect deepfakes, and the DCT method, which analyzes spatial frequencies to spot hidden artefacts.

The Thales team behind this invention is part of cortAIx, the Group’s AI accelerator, which boasts over 600 AI researchers and engineers. They have also developed a toolbox called BattleBox to assess the robustness of AI-enabled systems against attacks. Their expertise was demonstrated during the CAID challenge in 2023, where they excelled in finding AI training data even after it had been deleted to protect confidentiality.

Overall, Thales’ deepfake detection metamodel represents a significant technological advance in combating identity fraud and ensuring the security of AI-enabled systems in various sectors. This innovation showcases the expertise and dedication of Thales’ AI researchers in developing cutting-edge solutions for the evolving challenges of the digital age.
