Surge in Cyberattacks on Indian Government: A Call for Enhanced Security Measures

India is grappling with an alarming rise in cyberattacks targeting government entities, with incidents skyrocketing by 138% from 2019 to 2023. A recent report presented to the Rajya Sabha revealed that the number of cyber incidents surged from 85,797 in 2019 to a staggering 204,844 in 2023, underscoring the escalating threat to the nation’s digital infrastructure.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, through the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), has documented a consistent increase in cybersecurity incidents. After a brief dip in 2020, the numbers rebounded sharply, with 2022 alone witnessing 192,439 attacks. The trend shows no signs of abating, as 2023 has already recorded over 200,000 incidents.

In response to this growing menace, the Indian government is taking decisive action to bolster its cybersecurity framework. Jitin Prasada, Minister of State in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, assured the Rajya Sabha that comprehensive measures are being implemented to protect critical government information. Key initiatives include mandating the appointment of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) across all ministries and establishing the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) to safeguard vital infrastructure.

Noteworthy incidents, such as the thwarted cyberattack during the G20 summit in September 2023, highlight the urgency of these measures. Cybersecurity agencies successfully defended against 1.6 million cyber intrusions per minute aimed at the summit’s official website.

As cyber threats continue to evolve in complexity and frequency, the Indian government must prioritize cybersecurity investments and strategies to ensure national security and economic stability. The time to act is now, as the digital landscape becomes increasingly perilous.
