Major Wire Fraud Arrest: Abiola Kayode Extradited to Nebraska for BEC Scheme

Nigerian Cyber Criminal Extradited to Nebraska for Wire Fraud Charges

Omaha, NE – Abiola Kayode, a 37-year-old Nigerian national, was extradited to Nebraska on Wednesday, facing serious charges tied to a staggering wire fraud scheme that swindled millions from U.S. businesses. His extradition, announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nebraska, represents a significant development in the FBI’s relentless pursuit of cybercriminals.

Kayode, who was listed among the FBI’s Most Wanted Cyber Criminals, allegedly played a pivotal role in a Business Email Compromise (BEC) operation from 2015 to 2016. This complex scam involved impersonating company executives to trick employees into wiring substantial amounts of money to fraudulent accounts. During the indictment period, losses in excess of $6 million were incurred by numerous businesses across Nebraska and beyond.

After being arrested in Ghana in April 2023 at the request of U.S. authorities, Kayode was swiftly handed over to FBI agents. Upon his arrival in Nebraska, he appeared in court, where U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Nelson ordered his detention pending trial. The court will assess the severity of the allegations that encompass criminal conspiracy and BEC tactics, where employees were duped into obeying stolen email orders.

The indictment details that Kayode provided crucial bank account information to co-conspirators who sent fake emails, making them appear legitimate. Victims, believing they were acting on behalf of their company’s leadership, unwittingly transferred funds into accounts that were manipulated in the scam.

As the FBI intensifies its investigatory efforts, they remain committed to eradicating complex cyber fraud schemes like this one. The cooperation between U.S. agencies and international partners in Ghana has proven essential in bringing Kayode to justice, sending a clear message: cybercriminals will face severe consequences, no matter where they hide.
