New Delhi: CBI Arrests ED Official in High-Profile Bribery Case

In a landmark operation against corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended Sandeep Singh Yadav, an Assistant Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), for allegedly accepting a hefty bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a jeweller based in Mumbai. The arrest, which took place in the bustling Lajpat Nagar area of Delhi, followed a meticulously planned sting operation by the CBI.

The case began to unfold on August 3 and 4, when the ED raided the jeweller’s establishment. Yadav, leveraging his position of authority, allegedly threatened the jeweller’s son with arrest unless he paid a sum of Rs 25 lakh. After intense negotiations, the demand was lowered to Rs 20 lakh. Acting on a complaint, the CBI set up a trap and caught Yadav in the act of accepting the bribe.

Investigators revealed that Yadav holds a dual role, also serving as an officer in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The CBI has registered a First Information Report (FIR) and is conducting further investigations to uncover the full extent of Yadav’s corrupt activities.

This incident is part of a worrying trend. Just last month, another ED Assistant Director, Pawan Khatri, was arrested along with six associates for accepting a bribe of Rs 5 crore linked to the Delhi excise policy case. Moreover, a recent dismissal by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court of a Public Interest Litigation seeking a CBI inquiry into the arrest of another ED officer highlights ongoing concerns regarding systemic corruption within agencies designed to combat financial wrongdoing.

These developments underscore a pressing need for reform within India’s enforcement agencies, raising critical questions about integrity in the fight against corruption.
