CBI Raids ED Official for Rs 55 Lakh Bribery Case

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through India’s enforcement agencies, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a high-stakes operation against Vishal Deep, an assistant director at the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Allegations against Vishal include demanding a bribe of Rs 55 lakh while he was stationed in the ED’s Shimla office. However, during the raid on Sunday, Vishal managed to evade arrest by escaping in a car loaded with cash.

The CBI’s Chandigarh anti-corruption branch set up a meticulous trap to apprehend the accused. During the operation, officials seized Rs 54 lakh from the scene, suspected to be part of the bribe. Further investigations led to additional searches at both Vishal’s ED office and his Shimla residence, where authorities uncovered another Rs 56.5 lakh in cash, raising serious concerns about systemic corruption.

In a related development, the CBI detained Vishal’s brother, a senior manager at Punjab National Bank, as the investigation unfolds. He was later presented before a court, bringing further scrutiny to the family’s connections. The authorities are intensifying efforts to locate the allegedly fleeing officer, who continues to remain at large.

In light of these allegations, both Vishal and his supervisor have been transferred to the ED’s headquarters in Delhi. Sources indicate that the organization is adhering to a strict zero-tolerance policy concerning corruption, with promises of disciplinary action following the completion of the investigation.

This case is the latest in a troubling trend of corruption within the ED, raising eyebrows over accountability in the enforcement of law, particularly as Vishal was involved in investigating matters of fund misuse in government schemes. The severity of the case is underscored by its invocation of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, highlighting the enduring battle against graft in India’s institutions.
