CCPA Fines Coaching Institutes for Misleading UPSC Aspirants

In a significant move to uphold the integrity of the education sector, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed fines totaling Rs 15 lakh on three coaching institutes for their misleading claims regarding success rates in the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examinations. The announcement was made by the government on Thursday, highlighting growing concerns over deceptive advertising practices in the field.

The institutes penalized are Vajirao & Reddy Institute, StudyIQ IAS, and Edge IAS, with fines of Rs 7 lakh, Rs 7 lakh, and Rs 1 lakh, respectively. An investigation led by the Chief Commissioner of the CCPA revealed that these institutions had exaggerated their success rates, misleading thousands of aspiring candidates.

Vajirao & Reddy claimed "617 selections out of 933" for the 2022 UPSC exam, while StudyIQ promoted "120+ selections" in 2023. However, the CCPA found that most successful candidates had only participated in interview guidance programs rather than the comprehensive courses advertised. This significant misrepresentation inflated the perceived effectiveness of their offerings.

Additionally, StudyIQ IAS was penalized for failing to substantiate its promotional campaigns, including the controversial “Success Pakka Offer.” The institute was unable to provide required documentation, such as enrolment forms and fee receipts, to validate its boasts.

The CCPA has now issued notices to 45 coaching institutes, collecting Rs 71.6 lakh in penalties from 22 of them, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in educational advertising. This crackdown serves as a crucial reminder for students and parents to critically assess claims made by educational institutions before making financial commitments, ensuring they invest wisely in their futures.
