Gujarat Pioneers Forensic Crime Scene Management to Enhance Justice Delivery

AHMEDABAD: In a significant step toward modernizing crime investigation, Gujarat has become one of the first states in India to establish a specialized cadre of forensic crime scene managers (FCSMs). This groundbreaking initiative aims to improve crime detection, streamline evidence collection, and increase conviction rates.

Set to roll out on January 1, 2025, these forensic experts will be integrated into all districts, working directly with Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) officers. The FCSMs are expected to enhance collaboration between the Gujarat Police and the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS), marking a new era in the state’s criminal justice system.

Senior police officials have noted the importance of forensic science in recent legislative reforms, underscoring the initiative’s significance. The FCSMs are designed to streamline crime scene management and ensure that evidence is meticulously collected and preserved.

Key Responsibilities of the Forensic Crime Scene Managers:

  • Strategic Action Plans: FCSMs will create detailed procedures for managing crime scenes and collecting evidence.
  • Collaborative Investigations: They will coordinate closely with police teams and forensic laboratories to determine the specific investigative requirements for each case.
  • Evidence Handling: A primary focus will be on the proper collection, preservation, and transfer of crucial evidence.
  • Specialized Analysis: FCSMs will facilitate detailed analysis of vital evidence, including DNA samples, explosives, and chemical substances.
  • Digital Forensics: They will manage the collection and secure handling of digital devices for expert examination.

This initiative not only reflects Gujarat’s commitment to leveraging technology in justice delivery, but also sets a benchmark for other states to adopt similar measures in enhancing the integrity of crime investigations.
