Luton Woman Sentenced for Stealing Unreleased Music from Global Stars
In a shocking case of cybercrime, Skylar Dalziel, a 22-year-old from Luton, has received a 21-month suspended sentence for stealing unreleased music from some of the world’s biggest artists, including Coldplay, Shawn Mendes, and Bebe Rexha. Dalziel exploited cloud storage accounts linked to these artists, illegally accessing and selling copyrighted tracks on the dark web, amassing an estimated £42,000 between April 2021 and January 2023.
The scheme came to light when Sony Music Entertainment reported a breach in the cloud account of artist Upsahl to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Subsequent investigations traced Dalziel’s online activities back to her home in Luton, leading to a police raid that uncovered nearly 290,000 stolen tracks on her hard drives.
Prosecutor Richard Partridge highlighted the extensive impact of Dalziel’s actions, stating, “This type of activity doesn’t just impact artists but also thousands of workers in the music industry.” The repercussions of her cyber theft jeopardized the livelihoods of many, causing potential financial losses for both artists and their record labels.
Despite the severity of her crimes, Dalziel avoided prison time, instead receiving a sentence of 180 hours of unpaid community service. Authorities suspect she may have collaborated with international accomplices and are currently working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to further investigate the case.
DC Daryl Fryatt from the City of London Police underscored the broader implications of such cybercrimes, noting, “Cybercrime like this jeopardizes over 80,000 jobs annually. Today’s sentencing demonstrates our commitment to holding offenders accountable.” This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in digital systems and the lasting impact cybercrime can have on the creative industries.
