Panel Discussion: Cybersecurity Best Practices from BBG Experts

Experts Gather to Tackle Cybersecurity Challenges in Dubai

On February 3, cybersecurity experts convened at the British Business Group Dubai and Northern Emirates (BBG) for a critical Business Briefing focused on the latest best practices in cybersecurity. The event was prompted by a surge in sophisticated cyber attacks, which have become increasingly prevalent in today’s digital landscape.

The panel featured insights from prominent industry leaders, including Robert Kew, Managing Director of Kew Solutions, and Rupert Walmsley, Managing Director of Resolution IT, who set the stage with an overview of the evolving threats in cyber space. They emphasized the impact of remote work environments that have heightened vulnerabilities for organizations.

Jerome Murray, Cyber Security Consulting Lead at Control Risks, and Simon Bell, Cyber Practice Leader at Marsh Insurance, joined the discussion, moderated by BBG General Manager Katy Holmes. Murray cited real-world examples, such as the 2021 cyber attack on Ireland’s Health Service Executive, where a lack of risk planning led to severe disruptions in vital diagnostic services.

The panel emphasized the necessity of implementing basic security measures, like multi-factor authentication, to fortify defenses against attackers. Bell highlighted the financial implications of cybersecurity breaches, stating, “The actual cost of insurance is negligible when compared with the cost of a breach to a business,” underscoring the importance of protective policies.

Awareness and education emerged as key themes. Walmsley noted, “One of the biggest challenges is a lack of awareness across organizations,” while Kew urged leaders to prioritize cybersecurity at the executive level, framing it as an integral part of business continuity.

The event concluded with discussions on standardizing cybersecurity practices. By establishing territory-wide guidelines, the panel believes companies can better prepare for and respond to the growing landscape of cyber threats. As the digital world continues to evolve, the conversation around cybersecurity remains paramount for businesses seeking to safeguard their operations.
