Delhi Police Busts Cyber Phishing Gang Operating from Jamtara
Delhi Police have dismantled a sophisticated online cyber phishing operation linked to the notorious Jamtara region of Jharkhand, arresting six individuals involved in the illicit scheme. This notorious gang specialized in siphoning funds from unsuspecting victims by exploiting fake customer service numbers, leading to significant financial losses.
The gang had ingeniously registered counterfeit toll-free numbers across multiple banks and payment wallets on Google phone listings. When potential victims searched for authentic customer service numbers, they were directed to these fraudulent listings. Upon calling, victims would be met with silence initially, but shortly receive a call from an individual posing as a bank executive who would trick them into clicking on a malicious link. Once clicked, funds were quickly and discreetly withdrawn from their bank accounts.
Following a tip-off, Delhi Police initiated a meticulous investigation, uncovering a network of hundreds of mobile numbers associated with these fraudulent activities. These numbers were primarily used to mislead investigators, with many showing no outgoing calls but instead revealing irregular messaging activity.
The breakthrough came when authorities tracked down a particular mobile number to Jamtara through detailed bank account analyses. The investigation led to the arrest of Nasim Ansari, who disclosed a series of associates involved in the scam. Officers recovered 15 ATM cards, a swipe machine, and a fingerprint scanner from his possession, hinting at a methodical operation.
In total, six suspects were apprehended, and authorities seized 25 ATM cards, ₹1,78,500 in cash, and three blank cheques. Police officials expressed confidence that further investigations will unearth additional layers of this criminal nexus operating across India. This bust highlights the critical importance of public awareness in protecting oneself from such cyber threats.
