UAE partners with UN Climate Security Mechanism

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has entered into a new partnership with the United Nations Climate Security Mechanism (CSM) to tackle global issues related to climate change. This collaboration will see the UAE providing an annual contribution of USD$600,000 for two years, amounting to a total of USD$1.2 million.

Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister for Energy Transition and Sustainability Affairs, emphasized the UAE’s dedication to addressing the risks of climate change and promoting peace and security on a regional and global scale. This partnership further demonstrates the UAE’s proactive diplomacy and commitment to international cooperation on pressing global issues.

As part of this partnership, the UAE will fund the creation of a Climate Security Advisor position at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). This advisor will assess climate-related security risks and develop strategies to prevent and manage these challenges. Additionally, the partnership includes unearmarked funding for the CSM, allowing for flexible support for global climate, peace, and security efforts.

Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab highlighted the importance of addressing climate vulnerabilities in countries like Afghanistan, which struggles with water shortages, floods, and other natural disasters. The partnership with the CSM aligns with the UAE’s commitment to advancing climate adaptation and stability in vulnerable regions.

Rosemary DiCarlo, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, expressed delight at the UAE joining the Climate Security Mechanism and stressed the positive impact this partnership will have on global climate, peace, and security initiatives, particularly in countries like Afghanistan.

Overall, the UAE’s collaboration with the UN Climate Security Mechanism underscores its dedication to addressing climate-related challenges and promoting peace and security on a global scale. This partnership sets a positive example for international cooperation in addressing pressing environmental issues.
