Interview with Komprise Co-Founder and COO Krishna Subramanian on Unstructured Data Management and Disaster Recovery Techniques for Companies

Krishna Subramanian, the co-founder and COO of Komprise, recently discussed the importance of managing unstructured data and highlighted data management techniques that companies can employ to mitigate losses from cyber-attacks and other disasters.

With disasters on the rise, including climate change, ransomware attacks, and geopolitical conflicts, businesses are increasingly at risk of suffering financial losses. In 2023 alone, the US faced an estimated $92 billion in costs from climate-related disasters, while ransomware attacks cost businesses an average of $1.85 million each.

Subramanian stressed the need for a shift in data management strategies, especially considering that unstructured data now constitutes at least 80% of all data stored by enterprises. Traditional disaster recovery methods are no longer sustainable, with IT spending on storage accounting for a significant portion of the budget.

One key aspect of effective data management is the ability to replicate data flexibly and cost-effectively, taking into account the varying levels of importance and criticality of different data sets. By implementing tiered replication strategies and leveraging technologies like AI, organizations can better protect their data from cyber threats and ensure robust disaster recovery capabilities.

Subramanian also highlighted the role of AI in scanning and categorizing sensitive data, allowing organizations to prioritize protection for critical datasets. By adopting a more nuanced approach to data management and disaster recovery, companies can not only reduce costs but also enhance their overall security posture in the face of evolving cyber threats.
