UAE’s EDGE Signs Major Naval Contract with Kuwait

UAE defense company EDGE has recently announced a significant milestone in its maritime operations: a contract worth AED9 billion ($2.45 billion) with the Kuwait Ministry of Defence. This agreement involves the supply of FALAJ3 62-meter missile boats and stands out as the largest naval shipbuilding export in the region.

A Landmark Deal in Naval Shipbuilding

This contract is notable not just for its scale, but also because it ranks among the highest-value naval export agreements globally. This collaboration underscores EDGE’s growing influence and capabilities within the defense sector, particularly in the domain of naval construction. As the prime contractor, EDGE is responsible for managing the entire program, which includes the design, construction, testing, and delivery of the vessels. Furthermore, the contract encompasses Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) and In-Service Support (ISS), showcasing a comprehensive approach to defense solutions.

Comprehensive Offering with Integrated Support

As part of its commitment to ensuring operational success, EDGE will also provide the necessary ammunition for the vessels. This end-to-end capability not only enhances the functionality of the boats but also solidifies EDGE’s reputation as a competitive player in the international defense market. Working alongside EDGE, Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB)—the UAE’s leading shipbuilder and a subsidiary of EDGE Group—has been appointed as the subcontractor responsible for the building of these advanced vessels.

Strengthening Defense Ties between UAE and Kuwait

Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO of EDGE, described the agreement as a significant step forward in the enduring defense relationship between the UAE and Kuwait. He emphasized the importance of the deal by stating that it enhances long-term strategic ties, introduces advanced vessels to the region, and establishes EDGE as a trusted international partner. Al Marar expressed pride in the engineering and industrial advancements achieved by EDGE in recent years, highlighting the company’s ability to design and construct complex naval platforms at scale.

The FALAJ3-Class Missile Boat

The FALAJ3-class missile boat, which will be supplied as part of this contract, has already been chosen by the UAE Navy. The first vessel in this class, ALTAF, is set to be formally commissioned in February 2025, further validating the operational effectiveness of the FALAJ3 design in regional waters. These vessels are specifically designed to meet Kuwait’s operational requirements, featuring advanced combat systems and capabilities that are crucial for littoral defense missions.

A Signal of Growing Confidence in EDGE

This latest agreement not only reinforces EDGE’s position as a reliable partner for nations seeking comprehensive defense solutions but also serves as a testament to the UAE’s strategic objectives in enhancing its defense exports and fostering industrial collaboration. The success of this project marks a pivotal moment as EDGE embarks on a new phase focused on export-led growth, signaling global confidence in the capabilities the company has to offer.

Conclusion

The partnership between EDGE and Kuwait represents a significant development in regional defense collaboration. With the delivery of the FALAJ3 missile boats, both countries can advance their maritime security operations, ensuring that they are equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to meet modern challenges. As the UAE continues to bolster its defense industry, this contract further establishes EDGE as a leader in the naval sector.
