Co Wicklow Men Arrested for Dark Web Firearms Purchase

Background of the Case

In an alarming incident involving illegal firearms, one of three men from Co Wicklow has pleaded guilty to possessing a weapon purchased from the dark web. The individual, identified as Daniel Quinn Burke, made his appearance at Naas Circuit Court on Wednesday, where he faced charges alongside Shane Kinsella, another local resident from Tynock, Kiltegan.

Details of the Charges

Daniel Quinn Burke, a 22-year-old previously described as an apprentice mechanic, admitted to having unlawful possession of a Remington semi-automatic pistol. The offense reportedly took place on March 2, 2024, at Ponsonby Bridge, located near Straffan, Co Kildare. During the court proceedings, Burke’s defending barrister, Aisling Murphy, emphasized to Judge Elva Duffy that this was Burke’s first time in court.

Court Proceedings

In the same session, barrister Mark Gibbons, representing Shane Kinsella, requested a postponement for further discussion regarding Kinsella’s case. Kinsella did not speak in court during this appearance. Judge Duffy responded by ordering a probation report for Quinn Burke, while also allowing him to remain on continuing bail. His case is set to be reviewed again on October 7, 2024. Meanwhile, Kinsella’s hearings have been rescheduled for July 18.

The Investigation

The investigation began with a controlled stop of a vehicle at Ponsonby Bridge, executed by the Garda National Organized Crime Bureau alongside the Emergency Response Unit. During this operation, authorities apprehended the three individuals linked to the case. A third man, Evan Fitzgerald, aged 21 at the time, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident on June 1 at a shopping center in Carlow. Kinsella, who was 20 at the time of the arrest, was noted as a student.

Discovery of Firearms

Following their arrests, the trio faced charges after law enforcement found significant weaponry. The discovery included a Heckler & Koch rifle, a Remington Rand semi-automatic pistol, and 42 rounds of ammunition. According to the court, these items were purchased via the dark web, estimated to have a market value of around €2,700.

Nature of the Firearms

During a preliminary hearing at Naas District Court on March 4, 2024, Detective Garda Gavin Curran indicated that he believed the firearms and ammunition were not intended for use by organized crime. Instead, he suggested that the weapons were likely for shooting activities in wooded areas. The prosecution also noted that Fitzgerald had an interest in firearms more as a hobby than for any criminal intentions.

Delivery Method and Friendships

Interestingly, the delivery of the weapons and ammunition was reported to have occurred through face-to-face transactions, highlighting a level of personal involvement in the illegal procurement process. Authorities noted that the three men shared a long-standing friendship, which can sometimes complicate the interpretation of intentions behind their actions.

Operation Against Firearms Trafficking

These arrests form part of a broader initiative aimed at curbing firearms trafficking in Ireland, which has increasingly become a focal point for law enforcement. The authorities are working diligently to regulate and prevent illegal access to weapons and ensure public safety in communities across the country.

This case serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges related to gun control and the measures being taken to combat firearm-related crimes.
