Deployment of NIGCOY 9

On June 26, 2024, the 9th Nigerian Company (NIGCOY 9) became part of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia. This deployment aimed to bolster peace and stability within the region, illustrating West Africa’s commitment to collective security.

Recognition of Service

After a dedicated period of service, the members of NIGCOY 9 were honored with the ECOWAS Peace Medal during a ceremony on May 9, 2025. This medal serves as a significant acknowledgment of their service, reflecting both their sacrifices and dedication to maintaining peace in The Gambia and its surroundings.

Ceremony Details

The medal presentation took place in a formal ceremony that included notable dignitaries such as Her Excellency Mrs. Miatta Lilly French, the ECOWAS Special Representative and Head of Mission in The Gambia. The esteemed event was also attended by the Gambian Minister of Defence, Honourable Sering Modou, along with various high-ranking officials from military and civilian sectors.

Celebrating Commitment

During the ceremony, speakers highlighted the exemplary dedication demonstrated by NIGCOY 9. The contributions made by these peacekeepers to maintain order in the country were recognized across the board. Notably, the ECOWAS Special Representative praised the company commander for the impeccable organization of the parade, as well as the unit’s significant humanitarian efforts aimed at supporting the Gambian populace.

Strengthening Ties

The ceremony was marked by the presence of significant military figures, including a representative from the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General MO Cham, and the Chief of Staff of the Gambian Army. Their attendance exemplified the strong relationships cultivated between the Gambian Armed Forces and the Nigerian contingents.

Official Citation Presented

As a final gesture of appreciation, Mission Headquarters presented NIGCOY with an official citation. This acknowledgment affirmed the company’s vital role in sustaining peace and stability not only in The Gambia but also across the broader West African sub-region.

Through this commendation, NIGCOY 9’s unwavering commitment to peacekeeping and humanitarian support has been formally recognized, demonstrating the importance of international collaboration in fostering security in West Africa.
