Authorities allege that Paul Kostanich engaged in a scheme to steal sensitive information related to Giant Eagle’s Fuel Perks program.

Investigators reveal that Kostanich leveraged the dark web to acquire email addresses and passwords linked to 19 different accounts. With this stolen data, he managed to redeem Fuel Perks at a local GetGo convenience store. Police reports indicate that Kostanich used his family’s car for these transactions, and remarkably, he paid using his own debit card—all while employing Giant Eagle’s Fuel Perks app to facilitate the fraudulent activity.

The incident came to light when an Ohio resident noticed significant discrepancies in her Fuel Perks account. This prompted her to contact Giant Eagle directly. According to Corporal Conor Wohlfarth of the Peters Township Police, the woman reported that numerous perks had vanished from her account. Giant Eagle’s investigation revealed unauthorized transactions, including details about where and how much of her Fuel Perks had been taken.

Investigators have identified a total of 19 victims across Pennsylvania and Ohio. This data breach illustrates the far-reaching implications of identity theft, affecting numerous individuals who may not even be aware of the unauthorized access to their personal information.

“We believe he did access some part of the dark web to obtain these transactions from the victim’s accounts, which did include their emails and passwords,” Corporal Wohlfarth stated, further indicating how serious the situation had become.

In light of this incident, a representative from Giant Eagle issued a public statement underscoring the importance of safeguarding customer accounts. They encouraged users of the myPerks loyalty program to remain vigilant regarding their personal information.

“We appreciate the value Giant Eagle customers realize through our myPerks loyalty program and understand the importance of protecting the perks in one’s account,” the spokesperson noted. They advised customers to monitor their reward balances closely by using the Giant Eagle mobile app, frequently update passwords, and avoid reusing the same password across different accounts.
