A significant arrest has been made in Kerala, where a 35-year-old mechanical engineer, identified as Mulayamkottil Edison from Muvattupuzha town, has been apprehended for allegedly selling drugs via the dark web. This operation has raised concerns about online drug trafficking and the complexities of digital identity concealment.

Understanding the Dark Web

The dark web represents a concealed part of the internet that traditional search engines cannot access. To navigate this hidden realm, users must employ specialized browsers, such as Tor, which are designed specifically for privacy and anonymity. Unlike mainstream browsers like Firefox and Google, which can track user activity via IP addresses, the dark web shrouds user identities, thus attracting those seeking privacy.

The inception of this encrypted section of the internet can be traced back to the 1990s. Initially developed by the US Naval Research Laboratory, the project was intended to secure sensitive governmental communications. This early endeavor formed the foundation for what would become known as The Onion Routing (Tor) project.

Evolution of Tor

Tor has significantly evolved since its early days. Roger Dingledine and his colleagues fine-tuned the technology in the early 2000s to bolster online safety by routing internet traffic through a network of volunteer-operated servers. Each step of this process encrypts the data, making it nearly impossible to trace back to the user.

Within this hidden world, one can find not just black markets but also forums, libraries, and other avenues for digital exploration. Unfortunately, it is also a hub for the unlawful trade of drugs, firearms, and stolen data.

The Perception of the Dark Web

Though the dark web is often stigmatized due to its link to criminal activities, it serves several legitimate purposes. Whistleblowers, journalists, and activists regularly rely on this anonymity to communicate safely, particularly in oppressive regimes. Platforms like SecureDrop enable anonymous information leaks while protecting the identity of sources from potential retaliation.

Conversely, the same features that allow for secure communication also invite considerable illegal activity. Previously thriving black markets, such as the infamous Silk Road, facilitated the trade of a variety of illegal goods, from drugs to counterfeit currency and hacking tools. Law enforcement agencies globally are well aware of this sophisticated underbelly, yet tracking criminals remains a daunting challenge due to evolving encryption methods.

In relation to Edison’s case, he was classified as a “level-four darknet vendor,” a term specific to darknet marketplaces. This grading is based on both the potency of the drugs offered and the quality of customer service provided. Sources indicate that Edison was the sole level-four vendor known to be operating in India.
