In the wake of a ransomware attack earlier this year, the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia has provided an update regarding the alleged data breach. This communication comes months after the board was identified as a victim on the Dire Wolf hacking group’s leak site.

Confirmation of No Data Exposure

Libby Fulham, the executive director of the board, has confirmed that no substantial data has been published by hackers. "Some limited corporate correspondence was disclosed on Tuesday, May 27, which was removed within 24 hours following our immediate takedown efforts," Fulham explained in an interview with Cyber Daily.

Nature of the Disclosed Information

The brief exposure included minimal contact details, operational and resource-related information, and bank account specifics belonging to the board and a select few third parties who have since been notified. Fulham emphasized that, despite initial claims, the board has not found evidence of any serious data leaks tied to their operations.

Following initial threats from the hackers regarding potential data publication by June, the board has remained vigilant, keeping a watchful eye on the dark web for any further activity. “On June 19, the third party released a link that purported to contain data related to our board,” Fulham stated. “After thorough examination, we can confirm that this information does not pertain to us.”

In response to the incident, the board pursued legal measures to secure an injunction aimed at preventing unauthorized access or sharing of the compromised data. Fulham noted that the attack did lead to disruptions in some of the board’s systems; however, they are now issuing practising certificates directly through email to practitioners, ensuring continued service delivery.

Current Status of the Leak Post

At the time of this report, the leak post related to the attack remained active, with claims of having accessed 300 gigabytes of sensitive material, including financial documents and employee records. However, despite these allegations, there is currently no specific folder in the leak repository for the Legal Practice Board’s data.

Understanding the Ransomware Threat

The criminal group behind this ransomware effort has been relatively obscure, claiming 39 victims since their emergence in late May. Their "About" page reflects their motives, stating, "We are a group of hackers who only seek money." This group employs double-extortion tactics, which involve both the theft of data and threats to publish that data unless a ransom is paid.

The Legal Practice Board of Western Australia operates as a public sector, independent statutory authority responsible for issuing practising certificates. It also plays an essential role in supporting the Supreme Court of Western Australia with admissions processes. The organization is committed to promoting the legal profession and community through educational initiatives and professional development opportunities.

In the fiscal year 2023–24 alone, the board issued over 8,000 practising certificates, underscoring its importance within the legal landscape of Western Australia.

By addressing the recent malware incursion transparently, the Legal Practice Board aims to reassure stakeholders of their commitment to cybersecurity and operational continuity in the realm of legal services.
