Madhu Gottumukkala, Acting Director of CISA, expressed enthusiasm about Andersen joining the leadership team. “I am pleased to welcome Nick Andersen to our CISA leadership team,” Gottumukkala stated. A Diverse Background in Security
Andersen’s professional journey is characterized by a commitment to safeguarding vital systems against both physical and cyber threats. His military service as a U.S. Marine veteran has instilled a sense of discipline and strategic vision essential for leadership in security. Notably, he has been honored as Intelligence Executive of the Year and recognized as one of the “Top 10 CISOs to Watch” by Washington Executive Magazine.
In the corporate world, Andersen served as President and Chief Operating Officer at Invictus, where he spearheaded cybersecurity initiatives and integrated intelligence solutions for federal and commercial partners. His tenure as Chief Information Security Officer at Lumen Technologies Public Sector further showcased his talent for aligning public and private sector interests. There, he crafted a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy, launching secure offerings and forming collaborations that bolstered national security.
Significant Government Experience
Andersen’s contributions to public service are equally impressive. Between 2019 and 2021, he held key positions at the Department of Energy’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response. As Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and later Acting Assistant Secretary, he directed significant national efforts to shield the U.S. energy sector from both cyber and physical threats. His efforts included addressing Iranian cyber attacks and leading initiatives during energy crises and disaster recovery efforts in Puerto Rico.
Leadership Transition at CISA
Andersen’s appointment marks a transition in leadership within CISA’s cybersecurity division. Chris Butera, the previous Acting Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity, will now assume the role of Acting Deputy Executive Assistant Director.
