DP World Launches New Shipping Service from Morocco to the UK and Northern Europe
DP World is gearing up to introduce an innovative shipping service that will connect Morocco directly with the UK and Northern Europe. This new service is designed to streamline export processes, cutting down delivery times for fruit and vegetable shipments to Britain by as much as two days.
Benefits for Consumers and Retailers
The launch of this service promises multiple advantages. Most notably, it aims to provide fresher produce to consumers while simultaneously reducing costs for retailers. A significant highlight of this new arrangement is its environmentally conscious approach, which is set to dramatically decrease the carbon footprint associated with long-haul transportation.
Introducing "Atlas": The New Shipping Service
The “Atlas” service, set to commence operations in November 2025, will create a direct link between Morocco’s key export centers—Agadir and Casablanca—and DP World’s terminals at London Gateway and Antwerp Gateway. This means fresher quality produce will be transported more efficiently to both the UK and other European countries.
Cutting Emissions with Sea Transport
Utilizing two dedicated vessels, this new route aims to address the logistical challenges associated with moving fresh produce. One of the key benefits is the shift from road to sea transport, which is expected to facilitate the movement of up to 150,000 tonnes of fresh goods annually. This move not only ensures better quality but also has a positive environmental impact, reducing emissions by an impressive 250 kg of CO₂ per ton-kilometer. This marks a 70% reduction compared to traditional trucking methods.
Overcoming Traditional Challenges
Unlike lengthy road journeys that can exceed 3,000 kilometers, this sea route significantly mitigates challenges such as congestion, border delays, and vandalism risks. With its smooth passage, the service is particularly aligned for transporting delicate items like tomatoes and blueberries, ensuring they reach markets in optimal condition.
Investing in Infrastructure
To accommodate this new service, DP World has invested significantly in its infrastructure. This includes a fleet of 1,250 refrigerated containers, along with 1,000 high-cube 40-foot containers and 750 20-foot dry containers. These investments are in direct response to the increasing demand for general cargo transport between Morocco and both the UK and Northern Europe.
Enhanced Visibility and Transparency
To further streamline operations, the shipping service will leverage DP World’s CARGOES digital platform, which provides end-to-end visibility throughout the supply chain. This ensures transparency for all stakeholders involved, from exporters to retailers.
Current Export Landscape
Morocco is already a substantial player in the export of fruits and vegetables, with current volumes exceeding 6.5 million metric tonnes annually to Western Europe. This figure has seen a year-on-year increase of over 20%, driven by supportive trade agreements and policies that encourage sustainable shipping options.
Commitment to Sustainability
Markus Rodatz, Chief Operating Officer of Freight Europe at DP World, emphasized the company’s commitment to building smarter, more sustainable supply chains. He pointed out that the Moroccan-to-UK service not only boosts confidence in produce delivery times but also significantly reduces emissions. This sustainable approach is pivotal for both growers and retailers, ensuring that produce arrives fresher and in peak condition.
In summary, DP World’s new shipping service from Morocco to the UK and Northern Europe is poised to enhance the export landscape. With its focus on quality, efficiency, and sustainability, this initiative stands to benefit everyone in the supply chain, making it a noteworthy development for the region’s trading practices.
